It’s less than 2 months to the opening game of the AFCON 2013 – between Bafana Bafana and Cape Verde at Soccer City and yet it’s been reported that a mere 16 thousand odd tickets have been sold and about 40k for the entire showcase out of an estimated 600000 that are available. Really? How is this possible?
This tournament is supposed to be to Africa what the Euro’s are to Europe. Yet this is not considered an equal but a mere distraction to our continents top footballers who are plying their trade in the top leagues in Europe. To add to that clubs are somewhat hesitant to release their players. Maybe it’s also the poor timing of the tournament given its just after the Christmas break and slap bang in the middle of the European clubs’ football season. This is all further compounded by the high quality TV production we get from the comforts of our homes and the abundance of choice. Not forgetting the total lack of marketing for an event that’s estimated to cost R400m. Wow!
Well, I am certainly excited about yet another big sports event taking place in our beautiful country and I have purchased tickets for the opener and the final. Hopefully, it will be a successful AFCON for Bafana Bafana and come 10 February 2013 we will be participating in the final. Who knows? The last time we hosted it, we won it!
